Persephone Books – Applications

Because of the size of this project, I decided to split it into the initial branding and color decisions, and the practical applications of this system. Reading them in order would lead to the best experience.

Business Card –

For the business cards, I used a signifigantly zoomed in image of the logo, with two overlays of my texture from earlier, and a slight highlight with the light yellow.

I debated between having the outline to separate the logo from the background, but I decided to add it, as it gave more visual interest to the overall composition and allowed me to include more of the seeds of the pomegranate while still keeping that offset zoom effect.

On the back side, I cropped out the type logo, and did another offset zoom, this time of just the silhouette of the pomegranate, in the light yellow. I overlayed the print texture, and used several text blocks to separate the white text from the white background. I also included the whole logo in the bottom left corner, so that the viewer could see what the front and back are abstractions of. I kept it small so as to not distract from the overall composition.

I also had an alternate version that I ended up phasing out, that utilized blocks of the yellow over one side of the card to give it a ‘dipped’ effect. This version was less successful, but was helpful in developing the final, and illustrates another technique that would fit well into the system. I would definitely revisit these large rectangular washes of color behind the subject were I to expand the project further.

Bookmarks –

For each bookmark, I used a modified image trace on an image of a vintage fabric. I then highlighted elements of each design with a light yellow. On the back I included the name, address, phone number, instagram, and operating hours of the establishment so that it served as a kind of multi-functional business card.

Posters –

For the genre posters, I wanted to expand the system with graphics I hadn’t used yet, so I created an illustrated version of the logo pomegranate. I then colored it, and used it as the central focus of a set of posters, using simple graphic elements and quotes from books within the Persephone collection.

Tote Bag –

I designed a simple tote bag using the same design components of the previous products – though mixing the yellow and red on the same pomegranate was new here, and I am quite happy with the result.
